Bakuchiol started out as a gentler alternative to retinol, the gold-standard anti-aging ingredient, because it seemed to influence the genes involved in skin aging. Since then, scientists have discovered it does much more than initially thought. This review looked at all the available evidence—from lab studies to human trials—to understand what bakuchiol actually does in skin and how it compares to retinol. The research shows bakuchiol works similarly to retinol in several important ways. Both ingredients help rebuild the skin’s structural proteins, improve how skin cells mature and develop, and strengthen the skin barrier. However, bakuchiol also takes its own distinct path.

It activates protective defense systems in cells, boosts natural antioxidant enzymes that fight damage, reduces inflammation and pigmentation problems, and even influences how the body’s own fat-signaling systems work in skin. Interestingly, bakuchiol also appears to enhance the body’s natural retinoid activity without directly mimicking retinol’s receptor activation. Studies in simple organisms suggest bakuchiol may activate aging-related biological pathways. In real-world use, clinical trials consistently showed that bakuchiol improves sun damage, uneven skin tone, and overall skin quality—often with fewer irritation side effects compared to retinol. Rather than simply being retinol’s substitute, bakuchiol emerges as a multi-faceted compound that coordinates several interconnected skin systems to support resilience and repair.
