How each product is rated

Every product starts at 100 points. Points are deducted for each recognized ingredient based on its safety tier, which comes from real regulatory and comedogenic data already on file for that ingredient:

  • Avoid — prohibited in a major region−15 pts
  • Caution — restricted, or high comedogenic rating−8 pts
  • Moderate — mid comedogenic rating−3 pts
  • Generally low concern0 pts
  • Known fungal-acne trigger (any tier, additional)−2 pts

Only ingredients matched against our curated database count toward the score — unrecognized ingredients are excluded rather than guessed at, which is why each card shows “X of Y ingredients recognized.”

The final score maps to a label: 90+ Excellent, 75–89 Good, 60–74 Fair, 40–59 Poor, below 40 Concerning.

This is a starting heuristic built from regulatory and comedogenic data, not a dermatological verdict or medical advice — see the disclaimer above.
