Aloe barbadensis gel has been investigated for its ability to support immune function in skin exposed to UV radiation. In research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (1994), scientists exposed mouse skin to UV-B radiation and then applied aloe gel topically to see what happened to the skin’s immune response. #1: When aloe gel was applied after UV exposure, it reduced suppression of the skin’s immune response compared to untreated UV-exposed skin (J Invest Dermatol, 1994). The immune suppression they measured involved contact hypersensitivity and delayed-type hypersensitivity—essentially tests of whether the skin’s immune cells could still mount a proper response after UV damage.

#2: Aloe treatment appeared to help preserve certain immune cells in the skin, specifically Langerhans cells and dendritic epidermal cells, which normally decrease after UV exposure (J Invest Dermatol, 1994). These cells are important for the skin’s immune surveillance. #3: The protective mechanism does not involve UV screening or DNA repair (J Invest Dermatol, 1994). The researchers found that aloe didn’t prevent DNA damage (cyclobutyl pyrimidine dimers) or speed up the body’s natural DNA repair—meaning aloe appears to work through a different biological pathway than sunscreen or direct damage prevention. It’s important to note these findings come from mouse studies, and the research base appears limited to this single source.
