Centella asiatica juice has been the subject of recent laboratory research exploring two main areas of potential benefit. #1: In cancer research, a 2014 study in BMC Complement and Alternative Medicine exposed human liver cancer cells to centella asiatica juice and found that it triggered apoptosis—essentially programmed cell death—in these tumor cells after 72 hours of exposure, with stronger effects at higher concentrations (above 0.1%). The juice also caused DNA damage in the cancer cells and altered expression of genes involved in tumor growth (reducing c-myc while increasing c-fos and c-erbB2). Importantly, the juice did not appear toxic to normal cells in this study, suggesting potential selectivity for cancer cells.

However, this research was conducted in isolated cells in laboratory dishes, not in living organisms or human trials. #2: A 2025 study in Food Science and Biotechnology examined centella asiatica juice in an in vitro model (meaning cells grown in a lab) of intestinal inflammation. The juice significantly reduced the production and gene expression of pro-inflammatory mediators—chemical signals that trigger inflammation. It also increased tight junction proteins, which help maintain the intestinal barrier. These effects appeared to work through modulation of inflammatory signaling pathways (specifically MAPKs and NF-κB pathways). The researchers identified miquelianin as the dominant bioactive compound responsible for these effects.

Again, this work was done in laboratory cell models rather than in human subjects or living systems. Both studies represent early-stage research that would require additional investigation before any health claims could be made for human use.
