Methyl parathion is an insecticide that does not occur naturally in the environment. Pure methyl parathion exists as white crystals. Impure methyl parathion is a brownish liquid that smells like rotten eggs.Methyl parathion is used to kill insects on farm crops, especially cotton. The EPA now restricts how methyl parathion can be used and applied; only trained people are allowed to spray it. Methyl parathion can no longer be used on food crops commonly consumed by children. Methyl parathion is a white crystalline solid which is often dissolved in a liquid solvent carrier. The commercial product is a tan liquid (xylene solution) with a pungent odor. It is slightly soluble to insoluble in water. Usually with the liquid solvent it is a combustible liquid. It is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin absorption. It is used as an insecticide. Parathion-methyl is a C-nitro compound that is 4-nitrophenol substituted by a (dimethoxyphosphorothioyl)oxy group at position 4. It has a role as an acaricide, an agrochemical, an antifungal agent, an EC 3.1.1.8 (cholinesterase) inhibitor, an EC 3.1.1.7 (acetylcholinesterase) inhibitor, a genotoxin and an environmental contaminant. It is an organothiophosphate insecticide, a C-nitro compound and an organic thiophosphate. It is functionally related to a 4-nitrophenol.

Furfuryl alcohol (FFA) is a small organic molecule that forms naturally when foods are heated—particularly when sugars break down. It’s also deliberately added to some foods as a flavoring agent, and it has industrial uses. Because it’s produced in high volumes (over 1 million pounds annually in the U.S., according to *Toxicol Sci*), exposure happens through multiple routes: eating, breathing, and skin contact. The safety picture is complex. In rodent inhalation studies reviewed by the National Toxicology Program, FFA showed “some evidence of carcinogenic activity,” as noted in *Mutagenesis* (2015). However, this doesn’t automatically mean it causes cancer in humans—the mechanism matters.

Researchers found that FFA doesn’t damage DNA directly in standard laboratory tests, suggesting it may work through a different biological pathway if it poses a cancer risk at all. The key mechanism appears to involve enzymes called sulfotransferases (SULTs), particularly a human version called SULT1A1. When FFA encounters these enzymes, it can transform into a form that binds to DNA, creating structures called adducts (*Mutagenesis*, 2015). Scientists detected these DNA adducts in lung tissue from exposed humans, indicating the transformation does happen in people—though having adducts doesn’t automatically cause disease. Notably, even unexposed animals showed baseline levels of these adducts, suggesting background exposure may occur naturally.

For skin and respiratory effects, #1: testing in mice identified FFA as “an irritant and mild sensitizer,” meaning it can trigger localized inflammation and mild allergic responses upon skin contact (*Toxicol Sci*, 2012). #2: When mice inhaled 2% FFA vapor, they developed enhanced airway reactivity, lung inflammation with immune cell infiltration, and increased production of inflammatory molecules (IL-4, IL-5, and interferon-gamma) (*Toxicol Sci*, 2012). Interestingly, prior skin exposure made the lung response worse, suggesting the immune system can become “primed” by initial contact. These findings align with real-world observations: foundry workers exposed to furan resins (which contain or generate FFA) report high rates of asthma (*Toxicol Sci*, 2012), though causation hasn’t been definitively proven in humans.

Importantly, the sources acknowledge significant gaps. Immunotoxicity studies were explicitly noted as lacking before the 2012 research, and human exposure risks remain incompletely understood. The genotoxicity picture from *Mutagenesis* (2016) is also somewhat reassuring but limited: standard DNA-damage tests found minimal effects from FFA, even in cells engineered to express the relevant human enzymes, though this doesn’t rule out other mechanisms of concern.
