Beta-arbutin is emerging as a popular skin-lightening ingredient that works similarly to hydroquinone by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin (skin pigment) production (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2016). Because beta-arbutin and alpha-arbutin share similar chemical structures to the regulated ingredient hydroquinone, researchers have studied whether these arbutins might convert into hydroquinone either through chemical breakdown or metabolic processes in the body. #1: In pure solutions without additives, beta-arbutin shows good stability in water and methanol (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2016). However, #2: stability in actual cosmetic products like creams, serums, gels, and lotions varies depending on the formulation type and pH level of the product (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2016).
