Zirconium appears in skincare and medical contexts in different forms, and the research available is quite limited and specific to particular applications rather than general skincare benefits. #1: Medical implant biocompatibility — In a 2023 study published in Clinical Oral Implants Research, zirconium was evaluated as a dental implant material. When researchers tested how to clean contaminated zirconium surfaces, they found that certain physical cleaning methods (air-polishing and ultrasonic scaling) effectively reduced biofilm (a film of bacteria) without harming surrounding human gum cells. However, chemical disinfectants caused cell damage, suggesting zirconium itself is not inherently toxic but the choice of cleaning method matters.

This research focused on implants, not topical skincare. #2: Rare allergic and inflammatory reactions — A 2024 case study in Journal of Cutaneous Pathology documented a rare instance where a woman using an aluminum-zirconium antiperspirant developed a granuloma (a bump of inflamed tissue) in her underarm. Microscopic analysis showed the zirconium and aluminum had triggered a foreign-body inflammatory reaction. The authors note these cases are rare despite aluminum-zirconium complexes being considered “non-sensitizing” in standard testing. A separate 2021 case in Journal of Orthopedic Case Reports reported skin reactions in a patient with a zirconium knee implant, though investigation ruled out metal allergy as the cause.

#3: High-dose inhalation effects — A 1978 animal study in Infection and Immunity exposed rabbits to high doses of zirconium salts through the lungs and found inflammatory responses in the respiratory tract, but only at the highest doses tested.
