Colorants are pigments or dyes added to products to enhance their appearance. They come in two main categories: synthetic (chemically manufactured) and natural (plant-derived). #1: In food products, colorants are used to make items appealing and varied, despite rare adverse reactions (Food Chem, 2017). The gap between how common people perceive food colorant problems (7.4%) and actual documented cases (0.01-0.23%) is notable, though rates climb to 2-7% in people with atopic conditions like allergies or eczema (Food Chem, 2017). When reactions do occur, they’re typically mild and affect the skin; anaphylaxis is rare (Food Chem, 2017). Reactions can be triggered by immune mechanisms (immediate or delayed hypersensitivity) or non-immune mechanisms (intolerance) (Food Chem, 2017).

Diagnosis relies on careful dietary history since allergy testing usually doesn’t help, except for some natural colorants (Food Chem, 2017). #2: In tattoos, colorants are injected deep into skin using needles and contain carbon black (for black tattoos) or azo and polycyclic pigments (for other colors), often mixed with byproducts and impurities that may pose health concerns (Presse Med, 2020). The body naturally transports injected tattoo colorants away through the lymphatic system (Presse Med, 2020). When tattooed skin is exposed to sunlight or laser treatment, pigment molecules can break down into new chemical compounds that may be harmful (Presse Med, 2020).

After disposal, synthetic colorant particles can accumulate in water systems, blocking sunlight and creating environmental problems like foul smells and turbidity (Foods, 2023).
