Crude oil is an unrefined petroleum product composed of hydrocarbons and other organic material (Toxicol Appl Pharmacol, 2022). When it comes into contact with skin, the research presents a clear picture of irritation: crude oil causes increased pigmentation and erythema—a sunburn-like redness—in exposed individuals (J Toxicol Environ Health, 1991). In laboratory studies using mice exposed to weathered marine crude oil (the kind found after spills), #1: skin showed prominent epidermal hyperplasia, meaning thickening of the outer skin layer (Toxicol Ind Health, 2020). #2: Different mouse strains responded differently, with some showing more pronounced irritation and increased inflammatory markers including IL-1β, IL-6, and several other immune signaling molecules (Toxicol Ind Health, 2020).

Crude oil’s effects on immune function are complex. #3: When rats inhaled crude oil vapor, researchers observed changes in immune cells in the lungs and lymph nodes, including suppression of NK (natural killer) cells, which are part of the body’s defense system (Toxicol Appl Pharmacol, 2022). In skin specifically, #4: crude oil alone reduced contact hypersensitivity—a measure of skin immune response—but did not deplete Langerhans cells, which are immune cells in the epidermis (J Toxicol Environ Health, 1991). However, #5: when crude oil was combined with UVA radiation (long-wavelength ultraviolet light), the immune suppression was stronger and was accompanied by loss of these Langerhans cells (J Toxicol Environ Health, 1991).

This suggests crude oil may amplify UV radiation’s damaging effects on skin immunity. Regarding chemical accumulation: aliphatic hydrocarbons (a type of hydrocarbon) tended to build up in skin samples, particularly those with larger molecular structures (Toxicol Ind Health, 2020).
