Curcuma wenyujin extract has been studied for several potential effects, though most research is still in early stages (animal models and cell cultures rather than human trials). #1: Brain health and Alzheimer’s disease — A 2025 study in Phytomedicine found that the ethyl acetate fraction of Curcuma wenyujin extract improved memory and cognition in mice with Alzheimer’s-like disease, reduced the buildup of amyloid-beta (a protein linked to Alzheimer’s), and improved nerve cell appearance. The researchers suggest the mechanism involves reducing inflammation in the brain and activating cellular cleanup processes called mitophagy and suppressing pyroptosis (a damaging form of cell death).

However, this work was done in mice and lab cells, not humans. #2: Cancer cell growth inhibition — Multiple studies examined Curcuma wenyujin’s effects on different cancer cell types in laboratory settings. A 2012 study in Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Za Zhi showed the extract slowed growth of esophageal cancer cells in a dose-dependent way (meaning higher doses had stronger effects) by changing expression of genes involved in cell death and cell cycle control. A 2010 study in Integrative Cancer Therapy found that an essential oil extract from Curcuma wenyujin stopped cervical cancer cells at a specific phase of division (G1 arrest) and triggered apoptosis (programmed cell death) in lab cultures and in mice with tumors.

A 2019 study in International Journal of Nanomedicine tested gold nanoparticles made using Curcuma wenyujin against kidney cancer cells, finding they induced apoptosis through activation of death-promoting proteins. A 2014 study in Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Za Zhi investigated whether the extract could reverse drug resistance in gastric cancer cells, finding it reduced expression of P-glycoprotein (a protein that pumps drugs out of cancer cells, causing resistance) and improved tumor shrinkage when combined with the drug vincristine in mice. Again, these are laboratory and animal findings, not human clinical trials. #3: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity — Source 3 (International Journal of Nanomedicine) notes that Curcuma wenyujin possesses “antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antitumorogenic properties,” and Source 4 (Integrative Cancer Therapy) specifically mentions it has “antioxidative, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.”

Important caveat: Source 3 explicitly states that “the major drawback of this historical drug is its low bioavailability,” meaning the body may not absorb and use the extract efficiently.
