Fruit extracts are complex mixtures of plant compounds, primarily polyphenols—naturally occurring molecules with antioxidant properties. Here’s what the research currently shows:

#1: Antioxidant activity. Osage orange fruit extracts demonstrated good antioxidant activity in lab testing (Nat Prod Res, 2024), while Gaultheria procumbens (wintergreen) leaf, stem, and fruit extracts restored activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes SOD and GST up to 120-140% in UV-irradiated human skin cells (J Ethnopharmacol, 2024). Olive fruit extracts also showed antioxidant activity via polyphenols like tyrosol and oleuropein (Biomed Pharmacother, 2017). #2: UV protection and photoprotection. Gaultheria extracts notably enhanced viability of human skin fibroblasts after UVA radiation exposure (up to 115-120%), reduced ROS (reactive oxygen species, damaging molecules) by up to 48%, and decreased UV-induced DNA damage by up to 66-69% (J Ethnopharmacol, 2024).

This suggests potential protection against UV-related skin aging, though these are cell-culture findings, not human skin studies. #3: Anti-inflammatory effects. Gaultheria extracts reduced inflammatory markers IL-8 and ICAM-1 by up to 88% and 43% respectively in stimulated cells (J Ethnopharmacol, 2024). Prunus lusitanica fruit extracts showed 50-60% inhibition of inflammatory markers in cell studies (Int J Mol Sci, 2023). These findings support traditional uses for inflammation-related skin conditions but remain lab-based. #4: Skin hydration and safety. Osage orange fruit extracts were tested in vivo (on human skin) and increased skin hydration via electrical capacitance measurement and reduced irritation markers under occlusion, with no adverse effects reported (Nat Prod Res, 2024).

This is one of the few human-applicable safety findings in the sources. #5: Extract variation. Different parts of the same plant show different strengths—for Gaultheria, leaf and stem extracts were the most potent antioxidants, while fruit and stem extracts showed the strongest anti-inflammatory activity (J Ethnopharmacol, 2024). Limitations: All sources except the Osage orange study used cell cultures or lab assays, not human skin efficacy trials. Coccoloba uvifera research focused on chemical identification rather than skincare benefits (Plant Foods Hum Nutr, 2024). Olive fruit extracts showed anticancer effects in cancer cell lines, but this has no established relevance to skincare (Biomed Pharmacother, 2017).
