Witch hazel has been investigated as a potential treatment for diaper dermatitis (DD)—the common diaper rash that affects infants between 1 and 6 months old. While diaper rash rarely causes permanent damage, it can create significant discomfort for both babies and parents, making effective treatments valuable (Breastfeed Med, 2026). In one randomized clinical trial, researchers tested a cream containing witch hazel at a concentration of 12 mg per 100 grams of product against breast milk as a treatment for diaper rash in 60 infants aged 0-6 months (Breastfeed Med, 2026). The study used a validated severity scale to measure diaper rash before and after treatment.

#1: The witch hazel cream did produce measurable improvement. Infants treated with the witch hazel cream showed a decrease in diaper rash severity scores during the study period (Breastfeed Med, 2026). However, the study had an important limitation: the two groups started at different baseline severity levels, which makes it difficult to directly compare how well witch hazel worked compared to the other treatment.
