📚 Research & Evidence
🔬 The Science
Panax ginseng root extract has been investigated for two main skincare-relevant properties based on available research. #1: Antioxidant support — According to research in the Journal of Ginseng Research, when ginseng root extract was given orally to mice exposed to carcinogenic chemicals, it significantly increased levels of protective molecules in both liver and skin tissue, including reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and vitamin C. The same study found it also reduced lipid peroxidation (a marker of cellular damage). This suggests ginseng may support the skin’s own antioxidant defense system, though this animal research doesn’t directly translate to proven human skin benefits.
#2: Melanin regulation — Research published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry identified vanillic acid as the most abundant phenolic acid in ginseng root extract. In laboratory cell studies, vanillic acid suppressed melanin production by inhibiting the NO/PKG signaling pathway and reducing tyrosinase activity (an enzyme involved in melanin synthesis). However, this was demonstrated in isolated cells, not in human skin, so real-world effectiveness remains unclear. Importantly, the animal cancer prevention study used oral doses and measured internal markers; it did not test topical application to skin. The melanin studies were conducted in cell cultures, not living tissue. Human clinical evidence specifically supporting these mechanisms in skincare products is not present in these sources.
