🔬 The Science
The only research available on B12 and skin comes from a 1955 study in dogs examining how the body uses vitamin B12 during blood regeneration, which is not directly applicable to skincare. In that study, when B12 (tagged with radioactive cobalt so researchers could track it) was given during active red blood cell production, it concentrated in the stroma protein—the structural framework of red blood cells—rather than in hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein). This suggests #1: B12 may play a role in forming the structural components of new red blood cells during their earliest development stages (1955 journal). After the acute phase of blood regeneration ended, B12 levels in the stroma protein dropped sharply within two weeks.
The study also noted that #2: B12 appears to be mobilized and then cleared from the body relatively quickly, with radioactive cobalt appearing in urine in the weeks following B12 injections (1955 journal). However, it is important to note that this research was conducted in dogs during blood regeneration and has no direct evidence of benefits for skin health. No peer-reviewed skincare studies on B12 were provided for this summary.
