Vitis vinifera extract contains polyphenols and oligomeric proanthocyanidins—plant compounds with antioxidant properties. Here’s what the research shows:

#1: Antioxidant protection. The extract neutralizes reactive oxygen species (free radicals like DPPH and superoxide) that damage skin cells (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2023). This matters because oxidative stress is a driver of visible skin aging. #2: Anti-inflammatory effects. In lab models, grape extract reduced expression of inflammatory molecules (COX-2, IL-1β, IL-8) triggered by UV exposure or bacterial lipopolysaccharides (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2023). A separate study found that Vitis vinifera leaf extract could modulate the keratinocyte response to UVB, specifically affecting expression of a stress-response protein called K17 (Cells Tissues Organs, 2022), though effectiveness varied between cell cultures and actual skin tissue.

#3: Matrix protection. The extract inhibited enzymes (elastase, MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-12) that break down collagen and elastin—the structural proteins that keep skin firm (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2023). It also affected gene expression related to this process. #4: Cellular resilience markers.
