Vitis vinifera, the grapevine, is native to southern Europe and Western Asia (Phytother Res, 2009). The fruit contains various chemical compounds that have attracted scientific interest. Grape seeds and skin are particularly rich in active components including flavonoids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, procyanidines, and a stilbene called resveratrol (Phytother Res, 2009). The broader grape plant—including its fruits, seeds, stems, skin, and pomaces—contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids that researchers have been studying (Phytother Res, 2016). In skincare products, grape-derived ingredients serve multiple functions. #1: They primarily act as skin-conditioning agents, helping improve skin texture and appearance (Int J Toxicol, 2014). #2: Some grape ingredients function as antioxidants, which means they may help protect skin from oxidative stress (Int J Toxicol, 2014).

Beyond these cosmetic roles, some grape constituents also work as flavoring agents or colorants in formulations (Int J Toxicol, 2014). Research has explored a broader range of potential effects from grape extracts in experimental studies. According to reviews of published research, grape seed and related extracts have demonstrated antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties in laboratory and animal studies (Phytother Res, 2009; Phytother Res, 2016). However, it’s important to note that most of these findings come from experimental research rather than confirmed clinical benefits in skincare products. Regarding safety, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel assessed 24 grape-derived ingredients used in cosmetics and determined them safe at current usage levels and concentrations (Int J Toxicol, 2014).
