🔬 The Science

The research on wheat starch for skincare is quite limited. Here’s what the available science shows:

#1: Irritation potential — One small 1992 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science tested two soap-like cleansing bars (called syndet bars) in 72 volunteers. The formulation with higher wheat starch content caused less itching and visible redness compared to one with less wheat starch. However, this was a single small trial comparing two specific products, so we can’t generalize broadly about wheat starch’s irritation profile across all skincare uses. #2: Water absorption — A 2023 study in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules created lab-made materials from wheat starch that could absorb large amounts of water (581-998% of their weight).

While these experimental aerogels showed promise as absorbent materials, this research was conducted in a laboratory setting for potential food packaging, not tested as a skincare ingredient on human skin. #3: Texture and feel — Research in Polymers (Basel, 2023) found that when wheat starch is combined with certain gums, it can improve how hydrophilic (water-loving) the material becomes and affect its gel properties. This suggests wheat starch could influence the texture of skincare formulations, though again, direct skin benefits weren’t evaluated. The sources don’t contain clinical evidence that wheat starch provides specific skincare benefits like hydration, anti-aging, or acne control.

The celiac disease research (Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1997) is relevant only if you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity — wheat starch contains trace gluten that some people cannot tolerate.
