In research published in Environmental Toxicology (2022), scientists exposed hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2 cells) to various concentrations of an ethanolic extract of A. catechu seeds. The extract demonstrated #1: cytotoxic effects on these cancer cells, with researchers determining an IC50 value (the concentration needed to kill 50% of cells) of 77.04 μg/ml. The mechanism appears to involve #2: generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS)—unstable molecules that can damage cell components.
