What we know about (20S)-Protopanaxadiol, or PPD, comes from a single laboratory study published in Chemistry & Biodiversity (2020) examining how this compound affects human gastric cancer cells grown in dishes. #1: PPD reduced the growth of these cancer cells more effectively than a related compound called Rg3 (Chem Biodivers, 2020). Researchers used multiple techniques to measure cell viability and observe cellular changes under microscopes. #2: The compound appeared to work by damaging two critical cellular structures. First, PPD caused problems with mitochondria—the cell’s energy-producing powerhouses—by generating excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS, which are chemically reactive molecules) and disrupting normal energy metabolism (Chem Biodivers, 2020).
