Proven Benefits At A Glance:
- Silicon is a naturally occurring element found in everyone’s blood and body tissues, even without silicone implant exposure
- Modern lab techniques can now measure silicon levels accurately in blood, serum, breast milk, and tissue
- People with silicone gel implants do have higher blood silicon levels than those without implants, but the levels still fall within the normal range seen in people without implants
- Silicon measurements in blood, serum, breast milk, or tissue cannot reliably detect implant leakage
Safety tier is a starting heuristic from regulatory status and comedogenic rating, not a dermatological verdict — see our Terms for the full disclaimer. Research confidence reflects how many real cited studies back this ingredient, not the strength of their findings.

🔬 The Science
Silicon is the chemical element that makes up silicone compounds. Researchers have become interested in measuring silicon levels in the body as a way to detect whether silicone gel breast implants are leaking. Modern measurement techniques—including electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, direct-current plasma emission spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy—can now detect silicon accurately in body fluids and tissues (Ann Plast Surg, 1999). #1: Control subjects without any implant exposure consistently show silicon in their blood and serum, with levels ranging from about 100 to 170 ng per milliliter across different studies (Ann Plast Surg, 1999). #2: Women with silicone gel implants do have measurably higher blood and serum silicon levels than control subjects, but the elevated levels still fall within the normal range observed in people without implants (Ann Plast Surg, 1999).
#3: Breast milk silicon levels showed no significant difference between women with implants and control subjects in one study of 15 implant patients and 34 controls (Ann Plast Surg, 1999). #4: The tissue capsule that forms around silicone gel implants does accumulate much higher silicon levels than normal breast tissue, but this finding does not help predict whether an implant is intact or leaking (Ann Plast Surg, 1999). Because of large variability between patients and the inability to distinguish between leaking and intact implants, silicon measurements have no clinical role in monitoring for implant failure (Ann Plast Surg, 1999).
