Acanthopanax koreanum root extract has been studied in laboratory conditions to understand how it might protect skin. The research comes from a single 2016 study published in the Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology. When the extract was fermented using beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium bifidum), it showed several protective effects in human skin fibroblast cells—the cells responsible for producing collagen and maintaining skin structure. Here’s what researchers observed:
#1: Antioxidant protection (J Microbiol Biotechnol, 2016). The fermented extract effectively scavenged free radicals and reduced reactive oxygen species (harmful molecules created by UV exposure or cellular stress) inside skin cells.
The fermented version worked better than the non-fermented extract at this task. #2: Reduced signs of cellular aging (J Microbiol Biotechnol, 2016). When skin cells were exposed to UVB radiation or oxidative stress, the fermented extract reduced markers associated with cellular senescence—essentially the visible signs of aging at the cellular level, including senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining and upregulation of aging-related proteins (p53 and p21). #3: Inhibition of collagen-degrading enzymes (J Microbiol Biotechnol, 2016). The extract suppressed matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-3, which are enzymes that break down collagen and contribute to wrinkle formation. This effect appears to work through a specific cellular signaling pathway (MAPK pathway).
Importantly, this research was conducted in isolated cells in a lab setting, not in living human skin or in human trials. The fermented extract showed promise, but we don’t yet have evidence from human studies confirming these effects translate to visible skin improvements.
