Acanthus mollis leaf extract is being researched for two specific anti-aging mechanisms. #1: Tyrosinase inhibition — Tyrosinase is an enzyme that produces melanin and can contribute to skin darkening and pigmentation. In a 2026 study published in Foods, an optimized acanthus mollis extract inhibited tyrosinase activity by approximately 47%, which increased to 58% when chlorophyll was removed from the extract. The extract naturally contains compounds called benzoxazinones and verbascoside, which are known tyrosinase inhibitors. #2: AGE (advanced glycation end products) reduction — AGEs are compounds formed when proteins or fats react with sugars, a process that accelerates with age and contributes to skin stiffness and aging.
The same Foods study found that acanthus mollis extract reduced AGE formation when tested against methylglyoxal (a compound that triggers AGE formation), with activity at 1 mg/mL comparable to established anti-glycative agents.
