Bromelain is not a single compound but a complex mixture of multiple protein-digesting enzymes (called endopeptidases) and other compounds found naturally in pineapple plants (Cell Mol Life Sci, 2001; Foods, 2021). The mixture can come from the fruit or the stem, and these sources actually contain different enzyme profiles (Foods, 2021). #1: Anti-inflammatory and swelling reduction: Research shows bromelain demonstrates anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous (anti-swelling) activities both in laboratory and animal studies (Cell Mol Life Sci, 2001). A 2020 systematic review of surgical outcomes found that bromelain is particularly well-supported for reducing trismus (jaw tightness), pain, and swelling after tooth extractions (Ann Plast Surg, 2020).

#2: Pain control: A 2023 meta-analysis of 39 clinical studies found that oral bromelain reduced pain slightly but significantly better than control treatments, though the difference was modest (mean pain score reduction of 0.27 points on the scale studied; Nutr Health, 2023). #3: Wound healing: Topical bromelain significantly reduced the time needed to complete wound debridement by approximately 7 days on average across studies (Nutr Health, 2023).
