Curcuma longa root extract is a traditional plant ingredient with a complex chemical profile. Researchers using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry identified seventeen different phytochemical compounds in the extract, with the largest components being 2-oxo-cyclooctaneacetic acid (30.88%), curlone (20.99%), and tumerone (13.85%) (Pharmaceuticals [Basel], 2026). One major challenge with this ingredient is that natural plant extracts often have poor water solubility and bioavailability—meaning your body has difficulty absorbing and using them. Researchers at ACS Omega (2023) tested whether creating a nanoformulation (breaking the extract into extremely tiny particles, about 308.2 nanometers) could help. #1: The nanoformulation approach enhanced the dissolution potential and biological activities compared to the coarse plant extract.

When tested in lab conditions at neutral pH (7), the nanoformulated extract dissolved at concentrations up to 192.32 μg/mL. In test-tube studies, #2: the optimized nanosuspension demonstrated antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antifungal activities (ACS Omega, 2023). In computational modeling, compounds from Curcuma longa including alpha-curcumene, caryophyllene, bergamotene, tumerone, and curlone showed favorable binding interactions against selected cardiovascular and cancer-related molecular targets in silico. However, the authors explicitly note that further experimental validation through in vitro and in vivo studies is required to confirm these predictions—meaning these are theoretical findings that haven’t yet been tested in living systems (Pharmaceuticals [Basel], 2026). Two case reports documented people using turmeric root extract as part of multimodal treatment regimens.

In one case, a patient with endometriosis-related pelvic pain, lumbopelvic pain, and dysmenorrhea received turmeric alongside acupuncture, magnesium citrate, B-complex vitamins, bromelain, and black cohosh; she reported improvements in pain and sleep quality (J Chiropr Med, 2021). In another case, a 73-year-old woman with psoriatic arthritis received 500 mg daily of turmeric curcumin extract (standardized to 95% curcuminoids) combined with acupuncture, sarsaparilla, and vitamin D3, and reported increased range of motion and reduced edema and stiffness (J Chiropr Med, 2020). Important note: both cases used turmeric as part of combination treatments with multiple other interventions, making it impossible to isolate turmeric’s specific contribution.
