🔬 The Science

Ferulic acid is a phenolic compound (a type of plant chemical) that works as a free radical scavenger—meaning it neutralizes unstable molecules called free radicals that damage skin (Curr Pharm Des, 2021). It also inhibits enzymes that generate free radicals and enhances the activity of the body’s own scavenging enzymes (Skin Pharmacol Physiol, 2018). Here’s what the research shows:

#1: Photoprotection and sun damage prevention. When ferulic acid was added to a formula containing 15% vitamin C and 1% vitamin E, it dramatically improved the stability of those vitamins and approximately doubled their photoprotective effect against solar-simulated UV radiation—increasing protection from roughly 4-fold to 8-fold as measured by skin redness and sunburn cell formation (J Invest Dermatol, 2005).

The combination also reduced thymine dimer formation (a marker of UV-induced DNA damage) and inhibited apoptosis (cell death) by reducing caspase-3 and caspase-7 activation (J Invest Dermatol, 2005). #2: Wrinkle and elasticity improvement. In a clinical trial combining fractional microneedle radiofrequency treatment with a topical serum containing vitamin C, E, and ferulic acid, the antioxidant-treated side of the neck showed significantly greater wrinkle reduction (29.9% vs. 18.0%) and increased elasticity (12.9% vs. 2.3%) compared to placebo at 12 weeks (J Dermatolog Treat, 2025). Histological analysis showed the antioxidant-treated areas had increased elastin production and reduced markers of cellular aging (J Dermatolog Treat, 2025).

#3: Protective effects on skin structures. Ferulic acid has a protective role for keratinocytes (surface skin cells), fibroblasts (collagen-producing cells), collagen, and elastin (Skin Pharmacol Physiol, 2018). It also inhibits melanogenesis (pigment formation), enhances angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), and accelerates wound healing (Skin Pharmacol Physiol, 2018). #4: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Research confirms ferulic acid has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, with the ability to address skin damage from UV exposure that can cause inflammation, dryness, wrinkles, and cancer (Curr Pharm Des, 2021). However, there’s a critical limitation: ferulic acid is rapidly oxidized, which significantly limits its effectiveness (Skin Pharmacol Physiol, 2018).

This is why the research emphasizes that ferulic acid works best when combined with stabilizing partners like vitamins C and E—the combination provides synergistic protection stronger than any ingredient alone (J Invest Dermatol, 2005; Curr Pharm Des, 2021). The scientific literature shows that pairing ferulic acid with other actives and using new delivery technologies improves both its bioavailability (how well skin absorbs it) and stability (Curr Pharm Des, 2021).
