Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, often abbreviated as EGb or Egb-761 in research, is a concentrated plant preparation containing more than 170 different bioactive compounds (Food Funct, 2022). Here’s what the current research suggests:

#1: Anti-inflammatory potential — In a rat study, ginkgo extract reduced paw swelling and lowered levels of inflammatory markers including malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in inflamed tissue. This effect was observed both when the extract was taken internally and when applied topically as an ointment. However, a steroid medication (dexamethasone) showed slightly stronger anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in the same study (J Ethnopharmacol, 2022).

#2: Memory and learning support — When rats with memory impairment were given ginkgo extract daily for two months, they showed improved performance on learning tests and reduced levels of an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase in the brain region responsible for memory (the hippocampus). The benefit appeared to increase with higher doses (Chin J Integr Med, 2006). Important context: One concern with ginkgo extract is the presence of ginkgolic acids, compounds that research has linked to potential toxicity in laboratory studies. Because of this, major pharmaceutical organizations (Chinese, European, and U.S. pharmacopeias) require that quality extracts contain less than 5 micrograms per gram of these acids (Food Funct, 2022).

All the research cited here used animal models; human clinical trials would be needed to confirm whether these effects translate to skin or cognitive benefits in people.
