Hydrolyzed soy protein is created by breaking down whole soy protein into smaller molecular fragments through a chemical or enzymatic process. Research on the allergenic properties of this ingredient comes from a controlled study in dogs. #1: Reduced allergic binding — According to the American Journal of Veterinary Research (2006), when researchers compared hydrolyzed soy protein to native (unprocessed) soy protein in dogs that had been experimentally sensitized to soy, the hydrolyzed version showed significantly reduced binding of soy-specific IgE antibodies (the immune markers responsible for allergic reactions). In sensitized dogs exposed to native soy protein, researchers detected clear, distinct allergenic bands in blood tests.

In contrast, when those same dogs’ blood was tested against whole hydrolyzed soy protein, only a diffuse, less reactive pattern appeared, suggesting the hydrolysis process alters the structures that trigger allergic responses. Control dogs with no soy sensitivity showed no allergic reaction to either form, confirming the response was specific to sensitized animals. It’s important to note that this research was conducted in dogs, and the extent to which these findings apply to human skin or oral sensitivity to hydrolyzed soy protein in cosmetics is not addressed by these sources.
