Moringa pterygosperma seed extract (also called Moringa oleifera seed extract or MSE) is a plant-derived ingredient that contains up to 40% of a bioactive compound called moringa isothiocyanate-1 (MIC-1, also known as moringin)—a phytochemical is simply a naturally occurring chemical made by plants (Int J Mol Sci, 2024). This ingredient has been studied for its potential skincare benefits, though current evidence comes only from animal research and laboratory studies, not human trials. #1: Anti-inflammatory activity. When applied topically to inflamed mouse ears, MSE and purified MIC-1 reduced swelling in a dose-dependent manner (meaning higher doses worked better), with both causing approximately a 48–49% decrease in ear tissue weight compared to untreated controls (Phytomed Plus, 2023).

The extract also reduced inflammatory signaling molecules called cytokines and chemokines—specifically IL-6 (reduced 84% by MSE and 78% by MIC-1), MCP-1 (reduced 74% and 73%), and KC (reduced 56% and 43%)—suggesting it quiets the skin’s inflammatory response at a molecular level (Phytomed Plus, 2023). #2: Antioxidant and detoxification support.
