🔬 The Science
Punica granatum extract is a potent source of polyphenolic compounds—plant molecules with strong free radical scavenging activity, meaning they help neutralize unstable molecules that can damage skin (Postepy Dermatol Alergol, 2014; Food Sci Nutr, 2025). #1: Oral supplementation for visible skin improvements. In a 60-day clinical trial, a standardized pomegranate extract (300 mg daily) significantly reduced crow’s feet wrinkles, forehead fine lines, and forehead wrinkles compared to placebo (Am J Transl Res, 2024). The same study found improvements in skin radiance, tone evenness, skin moisturization, elasticity, and firmness. Notably, tyrosinase biomarker levels (an enzyme involved in melanin production) dropped by 3% in the supplemented group (Am J Transl Res, 2024).
#2: Topical skin tone and texture effects. A 12-week split-face study using a topical microemulsion formulation showed significant reductions in skin erythema (redness) and melanin levels (Postepy Dermatol Alergol, 2014). The skin lightening effects are thought to occur because ellagic acid, one of the extract’s major components, chelates copper at the active site of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production (Postepy Dermatol Alergol, 2014). #3: Protection against UV-induced damage. An aged pomegranate extract demonstrated high antioxidant capacity in laboratory testing and, in a 60-woman clinical trial, significantly reduced UV-induced erythema and melanin levels while improving skin hydration and lightness compared to placebo (Food Sci Nutr, 2025).
In cellular studies, the extract reduced reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokine levels under stress conditions (Food Sci Nutr, 2025). #4: Anti-inflammatory activity in topical formulations. Laboratory research using an ethosome gel formulation (a nanotechnology-based delivery system) showed good anti-inflammatory effects when tested on induced skin inflammation in animal models (Gels, 2022). This gel formulation achieved a 91.83% release rate of β-sitosterol, one of the extract’s bioactive compounds, suggesting effective skin penetration (Gels, 2022). #5: Safety profile. Across multiple studies—including a 60-day oral supplementation trial (Am J Transl Res, 2024), a 12-week topical trial (Postepy Dermatol Alergol, 2014), and a clinical UV protection trial (Food Sci Nutr, 2025)—no adverse effects were reported, and the extract was well tolerated by participants.
One human study also suggested radioprotective benefits for radiation-damaged skin in cancer patients, though this application is specialized (Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg, 2019).
