🔬 The Science

Resveratrol is a type of plant compound called a polyphenol that appears naturally in grape skins and seeds, along with berries and peanuts (Acta Biochim Pol, 2019). The compound has generated significant research interest because it exhibits multiple biological activities in laboratory and animal studies. #1: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Resveratrol can neutralize harmful free radicals and reduce inflammatory responses in cells (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2018; Int Wound J, 2022). When applied topically to skin, it protects cells against oxidative damage from free radicals and UV radiation by reducing the expression of certain inflammatory factors called AP-1 and NF-kB (J Cosmet Laser Ther, 2019).

#2: Skin aging and collagen. Topical resveratrol formulations have shown the ability to penetrate the skin barrier and may stimulate fibroblasts—the cells that produce collagen—potentially increasing collagen III concentration (J Cosmet Laser Ther, 2019). Additionally, resveratrol can bind to estrogen receptors on skin cells, which may help stimulate production of collagen types I and II (J Cosmet Laser Ther, 2019). These effects may help slow photoaging, the premature aging caused by sun exposure (J Cosmet Laser Ther, 2019). #3: Wound healing and scarring. Preliminary research suggests resveratrol’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cell-protective effects may support wound healing and help prevent excessive scarring, though the Int Wound J, 2022 review notes that more rigorous studies are needed to confirm these effects.

Important limitations: When ingested, resveratrol has “low bioavailability and solubility,” meaning your body absorbs relatively little of it (Acta Biochim Pol, 2019). While animal studies and laboratory research show promise for resveratrol against conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and various cancers, the evidence in humans remains limited (Nat Rev Drug Discov, 2006; Acta Biochim Pol, 2019). Most research on skin benefits comes from laboratory studies and animal models rather than large human trials (Int Wound J, 2022).
