🔬 The Science

Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A that your skin can absorb, store, and convert into active compounds. Here’s what current research shows:

#1: Protection from sun damage — Studies demonstrate that retinyl palmitate can reduce collagen breakdown in skin cells exposed to UVB radiation, and it may lower inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) triggered by sun exposure (Front Pharmacol, 2023). The mechanism appears to involve multiple cellular pathways related to inflammation, collagen production, and cell survival. #2: Support for skin repair — In laboratory studies, retinyl palmitate increased the rate at which skin cells migrate, which researchers suggest could help with damage repair and cell viability (Front Pharmacol, 2023).

When applied to human skin cells in a lab, it accelerated cell proliferation and boosted procollagen synthesis—a precursor to mature collagen—by 111% at a specific concentration (Antioxidants (Basel), 2020). #3: Cellular effects — Retinyl palmitate appears to work by influencing how skin cells divide and differentiate, processes that affect aging, immune function, and wound healing (Vitam Horm, 2007). Important limitation: The sources note that conventional topical retinyl palmitate formulations are commonly associated with adverse reactions including skin irritation, redness, excessive peeling, and dryness (Nanomaterials (Basel), 2020). Researchers are actively developing improved delivery systems to address these tolerability issues. The research base consists mainly of laboratory and cell studies; human clinical trial data in these abstracts is limited.
