Thioctic acid (TA) is a naturally-occurring organic acid that researchers have been investigating as a building block for advanced wound dressings in hydrogel form. A hydrogel is essentially a water-absorbing polymer network—think of it as a sophisticated, biocompatible gel material. The research identifies several properties of thioctic acid in these specialized hydrogel formulations:

#1: Antioxidant activity. Thioctic acid contributes to reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)—unstable molecules that can damage cells and impair wound healing (Materials (Basel), 2026). In one formulation, the hydrogel achieved 98.2% antioxidant radical scavenging capacity measured by ABTS testing. #2: Antibacterial properties. When combined with other compounds, thioctic acid-based hydrogels demonstrated antibacterial effects.

One formulation showed 99.1% effectiveness against E. coli and 97% against S. aureus bacteria (Materials (Basel), 2026). Another showed sustained antibiotic release in infected wound models (J Mater Chem B, 2022). #3: Hemostatic (bleeding-control) capability. In animal hemorrhage models, thioctic acid hydrogels rapidly stopped bleeding when applied directly to wound sites (Int J Biol Macromol, 2024; Soft Matter, 2022). #4: Wound healing acceleration. In both laboratory cell studies and animal wound models, thioctic acid-containing hydrogels increased collagen deposition and promoted faster wound closure (Mater Today Bio, 2025; Int J Biol Macromol, 2024). #5: Tissue adhesion and removability. The hydrogels strongly adhered to various tissues and skin surfaces in wet conditions while remaining removable without causing additional damage—a critical property for a medical dressing (Int J Biol Macromol, 2024; Soft Matter, 2022).

#6: Biocompatibility. Toxicity testing showed favorable safety profiles, with minimal cell damage and negligible hemolysis (cell destruction) at tested levels (Materials (Basel), 2026; Mater Today Bio, 2025). Importantly, all of this research examined thioctic acid as part of complex multi-component hydrogel systems—combined with other natural acids, proteins, or pharmaceutical compounds. None of the sources evaluated thioctic acid as a standalone skincare ingredient at consumer concentrations. The research focused on medical-grade wound dressing applications in controlled laboratory and animal settings, not topical cosmetic use.
