Certain types of mold called Aspergillus produce various useful compounds, including an ingredient that has become popular in skincare products for reducing dark spots and skin discoloration. To better understand these microorganisms, researchers in Brazil examined nearly two hundred preserved mold strains stored in a collection facility, using genetic testing to correctly identify each one. They then tested almost a hundred of these strains to see which ones could make the skin-lightening compound. The researchers selected the best performers and grew them in liquid fermentation tanks using molasses and corn byproducts as food sources. One particular strain produced significantly more of the desired ingredient than the others.
