A chemical ingredient called beta-naphthyl isobutyl ether, which is used in fragrances and cosmetics, has been evaluated for safety across multiple areas of concern. Researchers looked at whether it could damage genetic material, cause problems with repeated exposure, harm reproduction, irritate lungs, trigger skin reactions, and affect the environment. By studying this ingredient directly and comparing it to a similar chemical with more available data, scientists found no evidence that it damages DNA. When considering how much exposure people typically get, the safety margins were comfortable for both repeated use and reproductive effects. The ingredient did not show signs of causing skin sensitization at the levels currently used in products.
Testing also indicated it would not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions triggered by sunlight. Breathing in the ingredient in typical amounts poses no respiratory concerns. Finally, the chemical does not persist in the environment or accumulate in living organisms at problematic levels, and its environmental risk remains acceptable across major global regions where it is currently used.
