2,6-Diaminopyridine, or DAP, is a small organic molecule with the chemical formula C5H7N3. According to Acta Crystallographica C (2017), it is commonly used as an intermediate in making aromatic azo chromophores—chemical structures that create color—which are widespread in industrial dyes and pigments. This industrial use is well-established in the chemical literature. The compound can exist in different solid-state forms. One study in Acta Crystallographica C (2017) documented that DAP can form multiple crystal polymorphs (different structural arrangements of the same molecule), with a less stable Form II that converts to a more stable Form I when heated. DAP also combines with other pharmaceutical compounds: the same journal documented that it forms stable cocrystals—mixed crystals of two different molecules held together by hydrogen bonds—with piracetam and theophylline, suggesting it has chemical compatibility with other organic compounds.
Regarding detection and presence in consumer products, Biosensors and Bioelectronics (2015) reports that #1: DAP has been found in hair dyes and can be measured using molecular imprinting-electrochemical sensors, with detection capability down to 0.0275 mg/kg. This confirms the compound’s presence in at least some hair-coloring formulations.
