📊 Comedogenicity
📚 Research & Evidence
🔬 The Science
2-Amino-4-hydroxyethylaminoanisole sulfate is a chemical compound that functions as a coupler in oxidative hair dyes—that means it works alongside other chemicals to help create the final hair color during the dyeing process (Int J Toxicol, 2013). The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, after evaluating animal and human safety data, concluded that #1: this ingredient is safe for use in oxidative hair dye formulations (Int J Toxicol, 2013). However, there is one important caveat: #2: the ingredient should not be used in cosmetic products where N-nitroso compounds—potentially harmful chemicals—may form during storage or use (Int J Toxicol, 2013). While approved for safety, it is worth noting that #3: allergic contact dermatitis (a type of allergic skin reaction) from permanent hair dyes is common overall, and this particular ingredient has been identified as a rare contact allergen (Contact Dermatitis, 2016).
In a study of 902 dermatitis patients patch tested with this ingredient between 2005 and 2014, #4: 1.4% showed positive allergic reactions, making it an uncommon but real concern for sensitive individuals (Contact Dermatitis, 2016). The research did not indicate that the ingredient caused irritant reactions in these patients—only allergic ones (Contact Dermatitis, 2016).
