🔬 The Science

Acacia Catechu Gum belongs to a family of ingredients derived from acacia plants, which are complex natural materials. The most well-studied acacia ingredient is gum arabic (also called Acacia Senegal Gum), a polysaccharide made up of various sugars and glucuronic acid arranged in long chains with branched structures (Int J Toxicol, 2005). What we know about related acacia ingredients: #1: Gum arabic has been extensively tested and shows little to no acute or short-term toxicity, does not cause genetic damage in lab assays, and is not a reproductive, developmental, or cancer-causing toxin (Int J Toxicol, 2005). #2: Some clinical testing of gum arabic showed evidence of skin sensitization in certain cases (Int J Toxicol, 2005).

#3: Other acacia extracts have reported skincare functions—for example, Acacia Decurrens Extract and Acacia Farnesiana Extract are listed as astringents and skin-conditioning agents (Int J Toxicol, 2005). What we don’t know about Acacia Catechu Gum specifically: The research review concludes that safety data on gum arabic cannot be directly applied to Acacia Catechu Gum or most other acacia species, because the chemical makeup and contaminants differ between species (Int J Toxicol, 2005). The review identifies several critical gaps: the exact concentration used in products, the precise chemical constituents of Acacia Catechu Gum, whether pesticide residues or other contaminants are present, whether it causes skin sensitization or contact reactions at typical use levels, and whether it absorbs ultraviolet light in ways that might trigger photosensitivity (Int J Toxicol, 2005).

Until these questions are answered, the available evidence is considered insufficient to confirm the safety of Acacia Catechu Gum in cosmetic products.
