Arnica montana extract is made by soaking or processing the dried flower heads of the arnica plant using various methods—typically hydroalcoholic maceration (soaking in alcohol and water) or extraction in oils like soybean oil (Int J Toxicol, 2001). The resulting extract is chemically complex, containing fatty acids (palmitic, linoleic, myristic, and linolenic acids), essential oils, triterpenic alcohols, sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, carotenoids, and other compounds; the exact composition varies depending on where the plant was grown. In laboratory studies, researchers found that #1: arnica montana extract can activate heat shock proteins—specifically HSP70—in cultured skin cells, and this activation happened in a dose-dependent way, meaning higher doses produced stronger effects (J Dermatol Sci, 2015).

Heat shock proteins are cellular stress-response molecules that cells produce to protect themselves from damage. #2: When arnica extract or its purified compound AM-2 (helenalin 2-methylbutyrate, a type of sesquiterpene lactone) was applied to melanoma cells in culture, it reduced melanin production and decreased the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in pigmentation (J Dermatol Sci, 2015). Researchers suggested these findings might support use in skin-lightening cosmetics, though this work was conducted in isolated cells, not on human skin.
