🔬 The Science

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract comes from the Aloe barbadensis plant and functions in skincare products as a skin-conditioning agent—meaning it’s intended to soften or improve the feel of skin. The extract is sourced from the inner gel portion of the leaf, which contains polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates). The outer layer of the aloe leaf produces anthraquinones, which are naturally occurring compounds with a bitter taste; these are phototoxic (meaning they can cause skin reactions when exposed to sunlight) and can irritate the digestive system. Because of these concerns, the cosmetics industry has established a safety limit of 50 ppm (parts per million) for anthraquinones in aloe-derived cosmetic ingredients, and products are typically formulated with aloe concentrations of 0.1% or less by raw material weight (Int J Toxicol, 2007).

Animal research has documented several properties of aloe-derived materials: #1: fungicidal, antimicrobial, and antiviral activities have been observed in laboratory and animal studies; #2: effectiveness in wound healing and infection treatment has been demonstrated in animal models (Int J Toxicol, 2007). However, these findings come from controlled animal experiments and do not necessarily translate directly to human skin benefits in cosmetic products at typical use concentrations. Safety testing in animals showed that aloe-derived ingredients were not acutely toxic when given orally to mice and rats. Long-term dietary studies found that acemannan (a polysaccharide from aloe) was well-tolerated in rats at high levels.

However, some concerning effects appeared in specific animal studies: when aloe vera extracted with ethanol or methanol was given orally to mice at high doses over 3 months, reproductive toxicity and sperm damage were observed; water-extracted aloe given to pregnant rats caused miscarriage and skeletal abnormalities (Int J Toxicol, 2007). It’s important to note these are oral ingestion studies at doses much higher than typical topical cosmetic exposure. In humans, clinical studies of aloe barbadensis preparations demonstrated no phototoxicity, confirming that anthraquinone concentrations in well-formulated products are too low to cause sun-related skin damage. However, case reports document that some individuals have experienced acute eczema, contact urticaria (hives), and dermatitis from topical application of aloe-derived ingredients (Int J Toxicol, 2007).
