🔬 The Science

Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that naturally occurs inside mitochondria—the energy-producing structures in your cells (Curr Med Chem, 2025). Your body produces it on its own, but the amount decreases as you age. Both its oxidized form and reduced form (called dihydrolipoic acid or DHLA) work as antioxidants, meaning they help neutralize harmful molecules called reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that accumulate over time and contribute to aging (Curr Med Chem, 2025). #1: Potential anti-aging benefits—A broad research review found that ALA shows “protective role in biological systems” and has demonstrated benefits in preventing and treating age-related disorders including skin senescence (skin aging), though the review notes that “further mechanistic and clinical studies are highly recommended” to fully understand its potential (Curr Med Chem, 2025).

#2: Protection against UV damage—In an animal study, rats given ALA before UV exposure showed significant reduction in skin damage markers compared to those exposed to UV without treatment. Specifically, oxidative stress markers decreased, and the number of damaged (apoptotic) cells fell substantially (Cell Biochem Biophys, 2024). However, this was a rat study; human skin studies are more limited. #3: Skin microcirculation in aging—An animal study comparing two rat strains with different aging profiles found that ALA treatment “tended to improve skin resistance to low pressure” in the healthier-aging strain and improved “basal skin perfusion, endothelial function, and skin sensory sensitivity” in both strains (Biomedicines, 2022).

Again, this is animal evidence. #4: Nerve-related symptoms in people with diabetes—A 6-month human pilot study gave people with diabetic nerve pain a combination supplement containing 300 mg ALA plus vitamins, minerals, and other compounds. The active group saw pain scores drop from 20.9 to 13.9 (p < 0.001), while the placebo group saw no improvement (Nutrients, 2024). However, because this was a multi-ingredient formula, it's unclear how much of the benefit came from ALA specifically versus the other nine components. Important caveat: Most skin-aging evidence comes from animal studies or lab settings (in vitro). The human trial included ALA as part of a combination product, not in isolation.

Bioavailability remains a challenge—ALA has a short half-life and low bioavailability when taken orally, which researchers are working to improve through nanoparticle delivery systems (Bioimpacts, 2024).
