Calendula officinalis flower extract is gaining attention as a natural active ingredient in skincare development. Here’s what the current research shows:

#1: Delivery and formulation potential — Scientists have successfully encapsulated calendula extract into microparticles made from whey protein and calcium alginate, which completely released the active ingredient after 75 minutes at body temperature (Int J Mol Sci, 2024). When these microparticles were added to polymer films, the films became more flexible and retained more moisture while maintaining their structure. This suggests the extract could be effectively delivered through skincare formulations, with the added benefit that encapsulation may protect it from degradation.

#2: Antioxidant activity — When researchers combined calendula extract with zinc oxide nanoparticles, the resulting material showed antioxidant activity in two laboratory tests: 33.49% radical scavenging activity in one test and 46.63% in another (Int Wound J, 2024). In a separate rat study, calendula extract enhanced the body’s natural antioxidant defenses in liver tissue following burn injury (J Clin Biochem Nutr, 2008). #3: Wound healing signals in animals — In a rat burn model, oral calendula extract dosing increased wound-healing markers like collagen-hydroxyproline and hexosamine in treated animals compared to untreated controls (J Clin Biochem Nutr, 2008). The extract also reduced markers of tissue damage and inflammation.

Skin tissue examination showed visible improvement in healing patterns. However, this was an animal study using oral dosing, not topical application to human skin. #4: Safety profile — In laboratory cell tests, calendula-zinc oxide nanoparticles showed no apparent toxicity at concentrations up to 10 micrograms per milliliter (Int Wound J, 2024). Important limitations: The available research focuses on laboratory conditions and animal models. Human clinical trials on topical calendula extract for skincare are not represented in these sources.
