The ingredient’s usefulness comes down to its fatty acid composition—it contains stearic acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid, which give it particular physical properties like specific melting points (Planta Med, 2024). Cocoa butter can exist in at least six different crystal forms, each with distinct characteristics (Planta Med, 2024). #1: Comedogenicity concern—A small study using reflectance confocal microscopy (a non-invasive imaging technique) on six participants found that cocoa butter patches applied to skin for 2 weeks caused a statistically significant increase in microcomedones (tiny clogged pores) and follicles compared to untreated skin, with the effect persisting and growing through week 4 (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022).

This suggests cocoa butter may have comedogenic potential, meaning it could contribute to acne formation, though the study size was limited. #2: Stretch mark prevention—A larger, well-designed clinical trial involving 175 pregnant women found no difference in stretch mark development between those using a cocoa butter lotion daily and those using placebo lotion (45.1% versus 48.8% of women developed stretch marks; BJOG, 2008).
