Lavandula angustifolia extract has been studied for its potential to protect skin cells from UV damage. In research published in the Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (2019), scientists tested whether fermented lavender extract—processed using a beneficial bacteria called Pediococcus pentosaceus—might work better than regular extract. Here’s what they found: #1: When human skin fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen deep in your skin) were exposed to UVB radiation and treated with fermented lavender extract, they showed 8.2-14% lower expression of MMP-1, an enzyme that breaks down collagen, compared to cells treated with non-fermented extract (J Microbiol Biotechnol). Interestingly, this benefit appeared even when using lower concentrations of the fermented version.
#2: Fibroblasts treated with fermented extract experienced 20% less collagen reduction when exposed to UVB compared to those treated with non-fermented extract (J Microbiol Biotechnol). #3: The fermented extract showed 50% higher inhibition of ROS (reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules that damage cells) compared to non-fermented extract in UVB-exposed cells (J Microbiol Biotechnol). One important caveat: this research was conducted in petri dishes on isolated human skin cells, not on actual skin in living people. The fermentation process changed the lavender’s chemical structure—specifically converting certain plant compounds called luteolin and apigenin glycosides—which appeared to boost its protective effects. The non-fermented extract also showed some protective ability; fermentation simply enhanced it.
