🔬 The Science

Olive oil is a plant-based oil composed primarily of three types of fatty acids: saturated fatty acids (SFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) (ACS Omega, 2024). These fatty acids function as natural emollients—ingredients that soften and smooth skin—helping to hydrate and moisturize while creating a protective barrier that reduces moisture loss and maintains skin suppleness (ACS Omega, 2024). The oil also contains vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that nourish skin (ACS Omega, 2024). Beyond basic hydration, research has identified specific mechanisms for olive oil’s effects on skin. #1: Olive oil demonstrates anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (Environ Sci Pollut Res Int, 2022; Lipids, 2023).

In laboratory studies using mouse skin cells, olive oil activated a cellular pathway called Nrf2, which appears important for cell survival and protection (Lipids, 2023). #2: In the same cell studies, olive oil increased cell proliferation and migration while reducing apoptosis (programmed cell death), effects that researchers linked to Nrf2 pathway activation (Lipids, 2023). #3: In a study using diabetic rats with skin wounds, a combination treatment of aloe gel and olive oil showed faster healing compared to either ingredient alone, with improved markers of cell growth and new blood vessel formation (Environ Sci Pollut Res Int, 2022). It’s important to note that most mechanistic evidence comes from laboratory studies on cells or animals rather than human skin testing.

The sources support olive oil’s traditional use in cosmetics and describe its chemical composition clearly, but human efficacy data remains limited in these particular abstracts.
