Portulaca oleracea extract has attracted scientific interest for skincare applications, though the current research base is modest. #1: In a 2022 study published in Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, researchers investigated whether the extract could help with increased sun sensitivity that some people experience after alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) chemical peels. They used lab-grown human skin cells and found that when cells were exposed to both glycolic acid (a common AHA) and UVB radiation together, this combination damaged the skin barrier and triggered inflammatory markers (cytokines called IL-1β and IL-8). When portulaca extract was added, it reduced these harmful effects, suggesting it could theoretically help restore barrier function and calm inflammation after peeling treatments.

However, this was cellular research only—the original patient survey found that only 6.06% of people actually experienced increased sun sensitivity after AHA peeling, so the real-world prevalence of this problem is quite small. #2: A separate 2022 study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention examined portulaca’s antioxidant properties and found the plant contains polyphenolic compounds (natural antioxidants) and other phyto-constituents. The researchers focused on enhancing absorption using nanoparticle technology rather than testing skincare benefits directly.
