Description: SODIUM ACETYLATED HYALURONATE — hydration, enhanced-penetration form of hyaluronic acid.

All Functions: hydration, enhanced-penetration form of hyaluronic acid

Quick Facts:

  • Category: humectant

Proven Benefits At A Glance:

  • Sodium acetylated hyaluronate is a chemically modified form of hyaluronic acid designed to protect skin’s structural integrity
  • Research shows it may help reduce the enzymes (MMPs) that break down collagen in aging skin
  • A clinical study found visible wrinkle reduction around the eyes within 6 hours and continued improvement over 2 months
  • It appears to work against both natural aging and damage from UV exposure and pollution
Safety: Generally Low ConcernResearch confidence: Fair

Safety tier is a starting heuristic from regulatory status and comedogenic rating, not a dermatological verdict — see our Terms for the full disclaimer. Research confidence reflects how many real cited studies back this ingredient, not the strength of their findings.

🔬 The Science

Sodium acetylated hyaluronate is hyaluronic acid that has been chemically modified through a process called acetylation—essentially adding acetyl groups to its structure. Here’s why researchers developed this version specifically: as skin ages naturally, the balance tips toward breakdown over rebuilding of the extracellular matrix (the scaffold-like structure that keeps skin firm). Environmental stressors like UV rays and air pollution accelerate this problem by triggering overproduction of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs, which degrade collagen and other structural proteins (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022). #1: In lab studies using skin cells called fibroblasts, acetylated hyaluronate reduced the expression of genes that code for MMPs, and also reduced the actual release of these damaging enzymes—meaning less collagen was broken down (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022).

#2: When researchers tested this in actual skin tissue samples exposed to UV light and urban dust particles, they confirmed MMPs were reduced compared to untreated skin (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022). #3: In a clinical trial with volunteers who had facial wrinkles, the ingredient showed a visible “flash” smoothing effect on crow’s feet wrinkles and plumping in the nasolabial folds (the lines from nose to mouth) within 6 hours of application, measured using detailed imaging technology (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022). #4: Over 2 months of regular use, the number of wrinkles in the nasolabial area was reduced (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022).

The research is limited to one source, so broader efficacy claims or comparisons to other ingredients cannot be made from these abstracts.
