Aloe extract has been studied for several potential skin and cellular benefits, though research remains limited to specific models. #1: Wound healing and swelling reduction — In a rat burn wound study (Zhonghua Shao Shang Za Zhi, 2006), both aloe raw polysaccharide and aloe gel reduced tissue water content (a measure of swelling) in the first 48 hours after injury, performing better than the standard burn treatment silver sulfadiazine cream. The researchers found that aloe helped “lessen permeability and edema,” meaning it may reduce fluid buildup and inflammation. The same study measured two chemical signals in wound tissue — nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin (ET) — that are involved in inflammatory responses.

Aloe extract lowered nitric oxide levels and optimized the NO/ET ratio, suggesting it could “lighten vascular inflammatory reaction.” #2: Anti-inflammatory activity — A topical application study (J Am Podiatr Med Assoc, 1991) tested different fractions of an aloe vera extract on inflammation and found that one fraction decreased inflammation by 29.2%, while another showed wound-healing activity, decreasing wound diameter by 47.1% in a stimulated wound model.
