Ceramide NG belongs to a family of molecules called sphingolipids, which have various biological roles in the body. Here’s what the research actually shows:

#1: Vitamin D and Ceramide NG Levels — A 2017 study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences tracked 59 Type 2 Diabetes patients over 12 months. Those who received vitamin D supplementation (1904 IU daily) showed significantly increased plasma levels of both C18 dihydroceramide (the technical name for ceramide NG) and C18-ceramide after 6 months, compared to a placebo group. The researchers suggested this ceramide elevation might relate to how vitamin D influences glucose and insulin metabolism, though they explicitly stated the clinical significance—whether this is actually beneficial or harmful for diabetes progression—still needs clarification (Int J Mol Sci, 2017).

#2: Ceramide NG and Cell Growth Regulation — A 2004 study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry examined head and neck cancer tissues and found that C18-ceramide was specifically reduced in tumor cells. When researchers artificially increased C18-ceramide levels in cancer cells in the lab, cell growth was inhibited by approximately 70-80% through mechanisms involving cell death and telomerase activity changes (J Biol Chem, 2004). However, this was laboratory research in cancer cells, not human skin or cosmetic applications. #3: How Ceramide NG is Made — A 2002 Journal of Biological Chemistry study identified that a mammalian enzyme (UOG1) specifically regulates the production of C18-ceramide in cells, showing that this particular ceramide type has selective fatty acid requirements for synthesis.

The ceramide produced this way channels primarily into neutral glycosphingolipids (J Biol Chem, 2002).
