Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane is an organosilicon compound. Cyclomethicone 5 is member of cyclomethicone, which are a group of liquid methyl siloxanes that have low viscosity and high volatility. Cyclomethicones are cyclic in structure with a monomer backbone of one silicon and two oxygen atoms bonded together. Cyclomethicone 5 is used in cosmetic and personal products as a skin emollient.

Cyclopentasiloxane (also called D5) is a cyclic silicone—think of it as a ring-shaped molecule made of silicone and oxygen atoms. It belongs to a family of similar ingredients called cyclomethicones that all work as skin and hair conditioning agents (Int J Toxicol, 2011). #1: Safety data suggests these silicones don’t penetrate skin very well; the research shows “minimal percutaneous absorption,” meaning your skin acts as a good barrier against them (Int J Toxicol, 2011). #2: Based on the available evidence, cyclopentasiloxane doesn’t cause skin irritation or sensitization (allergic reactions), and skin exposure from cosmetics shouldn’t lead to significant amounts entering your bloodstream (Int J Toxicol, 2011).

One key property of cyclopentasiloxane is that it’s volatile—it evaporates readily. Research testing real-world use of antiperspirants, skincare products, and hair care products found that significant amounts of the ingredient simply evaporate during normal application and wear time (Chemosphere, 2013). When these products are eventually rinsed off or washed away, only a negligible fraction of the original cyclopentasiloxane ends up in wash water; most has already evaporated (Chemosphere, 2013). The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel concluded these silicone ingredients are safe at the concentrations and in the ways they’re currently used (Int J Toxicol, 2011).
