Dipotassium glycyrrhizate (often abbreviated DG) is a purified chemical salt derived from licorice plants that functions as a skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. According to the International Journal of Toxicology (2007), this ingredient is at least 95% pure when manufactured and is used in cosmetic products at concentrations up to 1%. One of its key characteristics is that #1: it does not meaningfully cross the skin barrier—when tested for transepidermal permeation through pig skin, dipotassium glycyrrhizate was undetectable in the receptor chamber, suggesting it works primarily on the skin surface rather than being absorbed systemically (Int J Toxicol, 2007). This limited skin penetration is reassuring from a safety perspective.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel concluded that dipotassium glycyrrhizate is safe in current cosmetic practices, noting it is not considered an irritant, sensitizer, phototoxic agent, or photosensitizer at approved concentration levels (Int J Toxicol, 2007). Beyond cosmetic formulations, recent research has explored dipotassium glycyrrhizate in wound-healing applications. In a 2022 study published in Acta Biomaterialia, when dipotassium glycyrrhizate was incorporated into experimental hydrogel wound dressings, #2: it demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and #3: the dressings promoted rapid wound closure, efficient tissue remolding, and collagen deposition while decreasing inflammation in a mouse full-thickness skin defect model, performing better than commercial wound dressing controls (Acta Biomater, 2022).

However, it’s important to note that this wound-healing research represents early-stage laboratory and animal studies; these findings have not been confirmed in human clinical trials for wound dressing applications.
